Pushkar City travel

Located in the eastern wing of the desert state, Rajasthan, Pushkar is one of the oldest Indian cities. Legend has it that the city was created by Lord Brahma who released a swan with a lotus in its beak and decided that He would perform a yagna where the lotus fell. The lotus fell in Pushkar and this is how the city got its name. Pushkar literally means ‘born of a flower’.

As of now, the Holy City of Pushkar is one of the popular tourist destinations of India and a sacred place of the Hindus who often regard it as a major pilgrimage.
Since time immeroial Pushkar has been luring people from all corners of the world. The indomitable tranquility of the deserts captivates everyone whereas the vibrant culture and tradition of Rajasthan pulls the young as well as the old towards it.

Tourists take great delight in seeing the magnificent temple of Lord Brahma. This temple is one of its kinds because nowhere else in India would you find a shrine of the Creator of the Universe (Brahma). There are several other big and small temples such as the Varah Temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the Savitri Temple devoted to the Goddess Savitri, the Apteshwar Temple and the Rangji Temple etc. All these temples (around 500) are centered around the holy lake, Lake Pushkar and have great historical and mythological significance.
The Hindus worship the Pushkar Lake that has fifty-two bathing ghats built around it. The water around each ghat is supposed to have special powers. For example the Naga Kund is considered to give fertility, Roop Tirth provides beauty and charm, the water of Kapil Vyapi is a cure to leprosy and a dip in the Mrikand Muni Kund gives the blessing of wisdom.
The great Pushkar Fair which is held annually in Pushkar is another great pull. It is the world’s largest camel fair that attracts people from all corners of the world. The fair mainly comprises of some unique competitions such as the “Matka Phod”, “Moustache” and the “Bridal Competition” etc. Some 50,000 camels nicely decorated participate in this fair. The Pushkar Fair is also a gala time for the Indian merchants and artisans. Numerous Indian traders from different corners of the country gather here and set up their shops to showcase various items that are exclusively Indian viz. the bead necklaces of Nagaur, textiles of Ajmer and Jodhpur, woolen blankets of Merta and so forth. Certain cultural shows and exhibitions are also organized in this fair to enliven the event. Movies are shown, competitions are arranged, bards and poets recite and sing tales of valor and heroism of the bygone days. Animal races and other competitions are added attractions of the fair.

The Pushkar Fair is held somewhere between October to March which is therefore, the ideal time to visit this city. Pushkar can easily be reached through air, rail or road. The nearest airport from Pushkar is located in Jaipur which is 131 km away. If you want to reach through rail, Ajmer which is at a distance of 11 km from Pushkar, has the nearest railway station. Ajmer is well connected with major destinations in Rajasthan. Pushkar can be reached through road also. It has two bus stands. The Marwar bus stand is situated to the north of the town by the post office and has buses to some long distance places including Delhi, Jodhpur and Bikaner. The Ajmer bus stand is located east of the Pushkar city and offers bus services to Ajmer and Jaipur.
